Get to know us a bit better...

Founded in 1990 by husband and wife partnership John and Ruth Hargreaves. JD’s, as it is known locally, provides a friendly environment for local and national cyclists to seek information, access great products and have their bikes professionally maintained. Located in an old building, known as the Yard, off Nelson Road, Ilkley, JD’s has now grown from a small bicycle workshop into a dynamic destination bike store with 8 full and part-time members of staff. The premises were built as horse stables for Ilkley, and are now aptly used to provide a different sort of environmentally friendly transport.

The shop extends internally to some 3,000 sq.ft over 2 floors. Outside there is a large enclosed yard, which is used extensively by adults and youngsters to test ride their prospective new cycles. The Yard also provides washroom facilities for both male and female customers as well as a custom-built bike washstand and secure bike parking. These facilities are available for use at any time by local cyclists.

The ground floor of the shop has a welcoming sales and reception area, which is surrounded by brand displays from leading cycle suppliers designed to suit the many and varied customers who visit the shop on a regular basis.

Also located on the ground floor is a separate clothing room, with changing rooms and an impressive array of ladies and gents cycling apparel. Local children are well looked after too with a dedicated children’s bike section with learner bikes available free of charge for those struggling to learn how to ride a bike.

Occupying a prominent position on the first floor is the service centre, the heart of the business. This is where all new bikes are built and quality controlled by four full-time Cytech qualified cycle technicians. They ensure that the cycling public receives top quality service to a very high standard. A comprehensive repair service is offered to all customers with any make of bikes, irrespective of where they were purchased.

Adjoining the service centre is the cycle showroom, with separate areas for each area of specialisation, including mountain biking, road cycling, leisure and family riding. JD Cycles offer demonstrations bikes which are available for full and comprehensive test rides - at no charge.

Meet our staff....

Jamie Shuttleworth:
Jamie started at the shop shortly after James and worked at the shop in between school and university. Jamies role has been front of house ever since and is very much “ the face “ of JD Cycles. After 15 years Jamie was brought into the business as a partner with Ruth and John and has recently been joined by James. Jamie splits his time at work between Ilkley and JD Tandems in Gargrave. When he’s not working he can be found walking all over the dales with Lilly and his fiancée Helen.

James Myers:
James started working at JD Cycles working part time whilst still at school about 16 years ago and has been with us ever since, and is now one of the partners! James can usually be found in the service centre, specialising in mountain bikes. In his spare time James likes nothing more than tinkering with whatever race vehicle is currently taking his fancy! (currently off road 4x4 racing, and has spent the last year competing in the British Cross Country Championship!

Simon Warren:
Simon joined us late 2011 from the cycle clothing manufacturing business he set & built up. An out & out Roadie with cycling written through him like rock. Simon will be learning the ropes from the master, Jamie, then put this into practice whilst driving JDs forward not only on the custom build side but pushing and improving the website presence in the UK.

Tony Monksfield:
Tony has been with us for some 9 years now. Tony is usually in the office keeping us all in line with our stock control and computer systems whilst booking in all our orders. Tony likes to spend his spare time riding his tandem with his wife Janet.

Marek Szczeplek:
Marek is our Service Centre Manager and has been with us some four years. He came to the UK 6 years ago, having grown up in Poland and has always wanted to work in a UK bike shop! Marek has a keen interest in road cycling and Fixies (fixed geared bikes for those not in the know!). Marek is our road bike specialist and is currently working on improving his fitness to compete (hopefully) in the cycle messenger world championships held in Warsaw (Marek's hometown) next year!

Rob Dodsworth:
Rob is the newest and best looking member of the mechanic team (only in his own opinion). Formally a member of the Booths supermarket establishment, rob joined in April 2010 as the new bike builder and general repair man. Rob is a very keen mountain biker, having travelled as far as Whistler, Canada, in search of new trails, but is just as happy shredding the moors and smashing a pint in Bar Tat after. 2012 will see Rob travelling to France to race the mega-avalanche and also completing his level two cytech qualification!

Brogan Hayes:
Brogan joined the team full time following an apprenticeship from school. Brogan’s spending his time split between the shop in Ilkley and JD Tandems in Gargrave as he is one of the tandem builders, although is equally at home in the workshop in Ilkley repairing bikes. Brogan can often be found cruising (& crashing, ask to see the vid) round town on his Commencal dirt jump bike.

Lily Shuttleworth:
Lily is Jamie’s dog. When Lilly can be bothered to come to work she can be found in the sales counter chilling! Lilly is one cool cookie and has found many friends during her time at JDs
